Clara's Windy Birthday

Two days before Clara was born, we went to the zoo.  One week after Clara was born, we took her to the zoo.  And then every subsequent birthday we've gone to the zoo to celebrate.  THIS year, for Clara's 5th birthday we headed to the zoo the Saturday before her day.  However, we had a crazy windstorm before we left, and by the time we got to the zoo there were fallen trees and branches everywhere, all over the roads, the sidewalks, fields, playgrounds.  So many trees had been uprooted, that the zoo had actually closed, something they never do!  They were worried animals would be able to climb up the fallen trees and branches and then roam the zoo grounds eating zoo patrons at their leisure.  So instead of the zoo we played on the playground.

 Sam looks very determined here!

Hyrum was a little monkey, climbing everything he could find.

(Don't worry, tradition was kept, and we returned to the zoo two days later!!)

After the playground, we headed to the Rainforest Cafe for dinner, and Volcano Cake!

And we enjoyed some balloon creations.

The next day we were surprised to see how much damage the wind storm had done!!  Entire trees, roots and all, had tipped over.  Our apple tree in our front yard tipped over, but there is an embankment on one side, so it's kindof.....leaning.  I don't know if it will just live like that, laying partly down, or if it will die.  It's a big tree though, so we haven't tried moving it yet.

 Pictures of our fallen trees.

This picture I stole from our friends.  The trees in their neighborhood fell and brought the whole ground straight up like a wall!  Several friends in the ward had fences broken, sheds smashed, and even trees fallen into their homes!

Clara opened up her presents on her birthday, she was excited about her Jasmine costume and her Jasmine doll.

And another armful of princesses!!

More August Fun

More playgrounds were visited.  We are always trying out new parks, as well as visiting all of our favorite old parks!

Brielle and Hyrum started their soccer season, which meant that Clara, Sam and I would hang out at school playgrounds for a few hours each week during their practices.

Why yes, we DO pair tie dye with plaid in this family!

Sam was pretty fascinated with what his older siblings were doing, and soon he had to have his own soccer ball that he would take with him to every practice.

Toward the end of August, Danny and Anne, and Belle and Sophie, came to visit!  They wanted to see all the wonderful Seattle sights.  Clara, Sam and I went with them on the Ride The Ducks tour (buses, that turn into boats) and it was a lot of fun!!

Then Russ met us afterward and we went to explore Pike Place market.  Here the kids are posing for me while we wait for the best clam chowder in the world!

Clara and Belle are watching as Piroshky, Piroshky employees make piroshkies.

Meeting the Pike Place Pig.

The next day we met Danny and Anne at Alki to eat fish and chips and play in the sand.  Then we grabbed some gelato, and headed home.   I wish I had taken more pictures.....but I didn't.

Playing on the Alki beach.

 Saying goodbye!

Another day waiting at soccer practice.

We visited the Evergreen State Fair, like we do every year.  This year we went by ourselves, and we didn't stay as long as normal because it was a CRAZY hot day.  Very hot.  I think it was 91 degrees.

Eating out one evening when Russ was working late.

More of August

One day in August we went to the Aquarium.  When Russ got off work, he walked down to join us.

After the aquarium we found some dinner, then went to the International Fountain to play in the water.

This is one of my favorite Seattle places.  The fountain pulses with music.  We always try to run up and touch it without getting wet.  We don't often manage!!

My new little walker!
I'm not pictured, but I got soaked by the fountain, trying to touch it without getting wet.  I badly mis-timed my approach!!

Afterward we went to the new Artist Playground, right under the Space Needle.  It's a fun and challenging playground with extremely high rope structures.

Clara needed Russ to help her at first, but then she was okay being up that high and going down the steep metal slides!
